As part of the plan to rationalise PSA Group’s product offering and get the group profitable again, the Peugeot brand is planning to reduce its global model range from 26 models to just 13.

Peugeot brand CEO Maxime Picat told journalists that the renewed range would be able to cope with demand in markets around the world. “The range will be lean and highly efficient as well as widely distributed around the world.”

He told journalists at the launch of the revised 508 model in London that the outcome would be to have four models in the A/B-segments, five in the C-segment and four in what he termed the C-SUV/D-segment.

Picat also noted that there are currently 13 Peugeot models from the current portfolio of 26 ‘from the 108 to the 508’ that account for 94% of Peugeot car sales across the world.

“The simplified range will help our customers to identify and relate to our cars even more than before and also our network to focus and consolidate sales for each vehicle,” Picat said.

Picat also revealed that global vehicle sales for the Peugeot brand in the five months to the end of May were up 5.4% to 683,000 units.

He said European sales were up 14% to 407,000 units in the period, with high growth evident in the retail sector and boosted by recently introduced models such as the 2008 crossover, 308 hatchback and the 308 SW.

In China, Peugeot sales this year to the end of May are up 28% to 157,000 units.

PSA Group CEO Carlos Tavares has already outlined a plan to reduce the number of models produced by the whole group from 45 to 26 by 2022.
