One such report, in the Coventry Evening Telegraph, said the firm is writing to owners of right-hand drive 206 models suggesting drivers make an appointment with an authorised service dealer to have a brake pedal pin replaced. Another report said that, if the pin failed, the pedal would be disconnected from the brake system thought the chance of that happening was slim.

The Coventry paper cited Peugeot saying that “in very rare circumstances” the fault could affect the braking system on models built between 1998 and February 2002.

A Peugeot spokesman reportedly told the newspaper: “Customers will be notified by letter and we will invite them to make an appointment at any authorised Peugeot dealer.

“Their vehicle will then undergo a simple rectification procedure, that will involve replacing a very small pin on the brake pedal.”

According to the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Peugeot said that it had decided to recall the vehicles in the interests of safety, and said it should not be a problem to address any faults.

The recall potentially will affect 206s world-wide as all RHD models have been built at Coventry since the model line was launched.

The paper noted that the fault came days after Peugeot’s French manufacturing director Frederic Fabre visited the Coventry plant and told workers the future was bright.

But the paper noted that, in recent months, there have been pay cuts at the plant and there is dissatisfaction among night workers on the D-shift.
