Nissan will cut 365 temporary jobs at its Wearside car plant in the UK as it cuts production, Chronicle Live reported. The company will stop 24-hour production on line two at the plant which manufactures the Juke and the Note because of a drop in demand.
Nissan had added over 2,000 jobs at the plant in the past two years as part of a GBP1bn (US$1.69bn) drive to deliver record sales.

A Nissan spokesman said: “Market conditions do not require the plant to be at such levels beyond the summer, therefore line two will return to two-shift operations from mid-June. This year we anticipate production volumes of 500,000 in Sunderland for a third consecutive year, which will be another record for the UK car industry, as we remain on track to become the number one Asian brand in Europe.”
The Unite union’s regional officer, Steve Cason said: “It is obviously very disappointing for everybody and we wish it had not happened but it is unavoidable. Nissan are still anticipating they will produce 500,000 cars this year so it is another record year for the UK car industry and we are hoping it will continue to pick up.”
