Nissan has told the UK Government that a quick decision on financial aid is needed from Europe to secure production of its new generation small car, reports the ‘Times’ (10/8/00).

The company is considering building the Micra in either Flins, the Renault site near Paris, France, or Barcelona, in Spain, as an alternative to the UK’s Sunderland plant although no grant applications have been submitted for those plants, says the report.

Quoting a spokesman for Mario Monti, European Commissioner for Competition, the ‘Times’ says that there is a firm proposal for aid from the UK Government to build the new Micra, whether it be a finished version or a preliminary proposal.

Citing a spokesman for the UK`s Department of Trade and Industry, the ‘Times’ reports that the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair believes that the Sunderland plant is the right place for Nissan’s Micra and that the UK Government will do what it can to make it happen.
