Volkswagen is broadening the appeal of its New Beetle with the introduction of a 1.6-litre model which will cost just £12,995 ‘on the road’.
Since its launch in left-hand drive, and right-hand drive introduction in January 2000, the New Beetle has turned heads across the country. But until now it has been available with just one engine, the 2.0-litre 115 bhp. With the same striking looks, Volkswagen quality and appeal and similar level of specification, the 1.6 is set to make the model even more popular.

Fun on the outside, serious underneath, the Beetle’s distinctive lines remain the same on the new 1.6 which features as standard anti-lock brakes, driver and front seat passenger airbags and front seat mounted side airbags. More technology comes in the form of ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), a sophisticated system which automatically senses any tendency for the car to slide. ESP reacts by applying the brakes to one, two, three or all four wheels and adjusts the engine’s power so a skid is probably corrected even before the driver is aware one has started.
The 1.6-litre engine is not only new to the Beetle, it is new to the Volkswagen line-up too. The eight valve unit produces 102 bhp from its 1596 cc, propelling the Beetle from 0 to 62 mph in 11.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 111 mph. Maximum torque is 109 lbs ft from 3800 rpm, yet the combined fuel consumption figure is 36.7 mpg.
Despite its competitive price, the Beetle 1.6, in addition to those items mentioned earlier, has as standard electric front windows, electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, remote control central locking and alarm, 16″ unique design eight-spoke wheels and, of course, a bud vase. It is also backed by Volkswagen’s three year warranty and 12 year anti-perforation cover. Options include a CD autochanger, sunroof, alloy wheels, air conditioning and winter pack (heated front seats and washer jets and front fog lights).
The New Beetle 1.6 is available to order now. Volkswagen UK expects to sell around 900 units this year, and 2500 in a full year. So far, more than 4800 right-hand drive Beetles have been sold in the UK since launch in January. This is anticipated to reach 7500 by the end of the year.
