Renault believes its Mégane Coupé Cabriolet and arch rival Peugeot, with its 307CC, will shake up the cabriolet market in the UK. It’s a segment worth 25,000 sales a year, dominated by the MG-TF and Mazda MX-5, with the Vauxhall Astra convertible holding a distant third place.

With predicted sales of 3,000 a year, the Mégane drop-top should beat the Astra to third place. “That’s our ambition,” said Renault UK’s product manager for the model, Sylvie Calmettes.

Most sales are predicted to be private, but the previous Mégane cabriolet was the best seller in its class among so-called ‘user-choosers’ in the company car market.

“The Mégane Coupé Cabriolet is a very exciting car with its folding glass roof which gives us a big advantage in this affordable class of cabriolet,” Calmettes said.

The new Renault joins a growing number of cabriolets available in the UK with a diesel engine and goes on sale in November priced from £16,500.
