UK motorists are now formally eligible to apply for a Plug-In Car Grant of up to GBP5,000 (US$7,800) for cars with C02 emissions of less than 75gm/km.
Last month, the British government announced a list of nine cars that would feature in the grant scheme, three of which are available to purchase now.

“The transition to ultra-low carbon vehicles is a great opportunity for the UK motor industry,” said Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) chief executive Paul Everitt.
“The Plug-In Car Grant will support the delivery of practical, low carbon vehicles and we will see further progress of new and conventional technologies in the years ahead. The incentive, coupled with the charging infrastructure programme, Plugged-In Places, is helping to develop a coordinated and comprehensive approach to creating vital consumer demand.”
The SMMT noted the UK government would continue to receive applications from vehicle manufacturers for more cars to be eligible for the Plug-In Car Grant, while another round of eligible vehicles will be announced later this year.
A total of eight locations will establish charging networks using Plugged-In Places funding.
London, Milton Keynes, North East England, Midlands, Greater Manchester, East of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland will share GBP20m to further the development of ultra-low carbon infrastructure, installing more than 15,000 charging points in the coming years.
Eligible vehicles for the grant in the UK include: Mitsubishi i-MiEV; smartfortwo electric drive; Peugeot iOn; Nissan Leaf; Tata Vista; Citroen Czero; Vauxhall Ampera; Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid and Chevrolet Volt.
