Mitsubishi Motors independent UK importer, the Colt Car Company, has sold more cars in the first six months of this year than it sold in the whole of 2000. The record-breaking figure of 18,550 vehicle sales is 16% up on the same period last year.

Jim Tyrrell, managing director of the company which trades under the name Mitsubishi Motors UK said: “We have grown the UK business on average 20% every year for the last four years. At Birmingham Motor Show in May, I announced that we would achieve another record year and hit 40,000 units. We are absolutely on-track to achieve this.”
Some of Mitsubishi’s core 4×4 vehicles have achieved good results. The Shogun (Pajero/Montero) SUV was up 46% on last year with 3,326 sales and the Shogun Sport (Challenger/Montero Sport) up an impressive 127% with 2,121 sales. The Dutch-built Space Star designed for Europe posted 2,480 sales, up 18% on the same period in 2003.
Sales of the Shogun Sport took off after a £2,000 price cut in January which resulted in a waiting list for some months.
Three new models will have joined Mitsubishi Motors’ revitalised UK line-up by the end of 2004. The Outlander (Airtrek) crossover has been on sale since January, the new Grandis MPV (minivan) arrives this month and the European-built version of the Colt supermini will be added on 1 September.
