With UK introduction of tough new company car personal taxation laws due next month, Mitsubishi is introducing its first common-rail direct injection diesel engine for passenger cars, a 1.9 litre turbocharger with intercooler DI-D (Direct Injection Diesel) four-cylinder engine.
The new diesel develops 100 bhp at 4,000rpm and 158 lb ft of torque between 1,700 and 3,250 rpm and is designed to have a flat torque curve in the mid engine speed range to provide responsive acceleration on UK roads.

The engine debuts in the Carisma hatchback which has a maximum speed of 118 mph and 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration time of 11.9 seconds, with CO2 emissions of 146 g/km.
The 1,870cc engine has electronically controlled common-rail injection in which the common rail fuel accumulator stores fuel from a high-pressure pump while an ECU directs fuel mist into the combustion chamber in precise amounts and also governs the multi-stage injection process.
Mitsubishi says this maximises performance and throttle response and minimises emissions with no over-fuelling during engine operation. Exhaust gas re-circulation is also used.
