Mazda claims that the launch of the hi-tech diesel engines in the Mazda 6 puts the manufacturer at the forefront of the diesel revolution that is sweeping the UK following the launch of a carbon dioxide emission-based company car tax system 18 months ago.

Mazda says that its UK brand sales – led by the 6 are ‘almost 50% up year-on-year’.

Under UK company car tax rules drivers of Euro IV emission approved diesel-engined cars escape the 3% supplement levied on vehicles that don’t meet the new ‘clean’ standard.

Drivers have a choice of two Euro IV diesel engines in the Mazda 6 saloon and hatchback – a 2.0 121 PS powerplant emitting just 172 g/km of CO2 (177 g/km in the estate) and a 2.0 136 PS derivative emitting 174 g/km of CO2. The latter will not be available in the estate line-up immediately so Mazda will retain the current Euro III-approved 2.0 136 PS engine.

All new cars launched in the UK must meet Euro IV emission standards from 1 January, 2005.

With the tax supplement removed all Mazda 6 four and five-door diesels fall into the 18% company car tax bracket compared to the 21% bracket prior to the arrival of Euro IV engines.

That means that the basic rate taxpayer at the wheel of the entry-level 2.0 121 PS 5dr S will save £95.17 a year in tax, while the driver opting for the estate derivative of the same model will save £101.77 a year in tax. Meanwhile, a basic rate taxpayer choosing a 2.0 136 PS 4dr/5dr TS2 will save £114.97 a year in tax.

Mazda says that by choosing a Euro IV diesel-engined Mazda 6 as their company car employees will save themselves around £300 or more in tax over the typical three year/60,000 mile replacement cycle.
