Reports last week said the automaker was recalling about 2,600 of its new MX-5/Miata models in the US because the driver-side front air bags are prone to dislodge a horn assembly from the steering wheel and the problem, which is prone to happen at very cold temperatures, could injure drivers.

Mazda will replace the front air bags on the cars at risk for the problem, the reports said.

UK PR chief Graeme Fudge told just-auto: “We are treating this as a special service campaign rather than a recall due to the very low temperatures at which this problem occurs – minus 30 degrees centigrade – and the fact that there have been no instances of this happening anywhere around the globe.

“The number of MX-5s affected in the UK is 1,096 and we will be writing to all UK customers.”
