Mazda UK is recalling 5431 petrol engined versions of its Mazda 626 range produced between May and November 1997 to inspect the timing belt tensioner.
It has been found that the tensioner spring can break, causing the timing belt to slip and the engine to stop.
“Mazda UK will contact the owners of all affected vehicles this week and will repair recall defects free of charge,” says Mazda aftersales director Christopher Jackson. “Every customer who receives the recall letter should contact their dealer immediately.
“It takes a Mazda technician 1.6 hours to inspect and replace any faulty tensioners. To minimise inconvenience to customers, our dealers will inspect cars as part of routine maintenance, where vehicles have an MOT or service due this month.”
Owners should contact their dealer to enable the work to be carried out. Dealers can be located from the Mazda UK website at www.mazda.co.uk or by calling the recall helpline on 0800 387942.
