The month of May saw car output rise 2.4%, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Fuelled by an increase in car demand in the UK, output rose to 150,626 cars last month compared to 147,026 in May 1999.
A 0.2% decline in production for export markets was outpaced by domestic demand.
