Exports provided nearly all the growth in May, climbing 35.3%. Home market output rose a more modest 5.6%.

Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: “With year-to-date production figures already up 17% on last year’s figure, it looks likely that the full year total could reach around 1.7 million.”

May commercial vehicle production rose 1.3% to 15,766 units. The first five months saw output up 1.1% on 2001 levels to 82,240 units.
Home market output was down again, by 30.5% in May to 5,852 units, but exports were 38.8% up to 9,914 units.

“Growth in CV production continues to be spurred on by vehicles made for export markets, particularly throughout the EU,” MacGowan said.
