The Guild of Motoring Writers has announced that Lord David Strathcarron, President of the Guild, died in London on 31 August following a heart attack. He was 82.

David William Anthony Blyth Macpherson, 2nd Baron Strathcarron, became President of the Guild in 1972 taking over from Lord Essendon, and was also chairman of the Guild in 1987-88. He was motoring correspondent of The Field for almost 50 years, a contributor to Advanced Motoring and the motoring website Hoot!


Educated at Eton, he joined the RAF in 1942 at the age of 18, serving until 1947. After racing 500cc F3 Marwyn and Kieft cars in the immediate post-war period, he founded the Strathcarron automotive supply company, remaining a consultant to the firm right up until his death. He was an active member of the House of Lords where he was a spokesman on motoring matters.


He is survived by his wife, Lady Diana Strathcarron, and his two sons Ian and Andrew Macpherson.


The funeral will be held at Mortlake Crematorium, London, on 8 September at 3pm.
