Eight thousand workers at Land Rover’s Solihull factory are to vote on 20 September on controversial plans to make the plant more competitive, the BBC reported.

The road map was drawn up by Land Rover’s own managers and unions at the request of parent company Ford, the report said.


The BBC said it had learned that video cameras will be installed to monitor work and piped music or radios will be banned. Other measures include “bell to bell” working, whereby workers will not be able to down their tools until their shift is over even if they have filled their quota. The number of shop stewards will be cut from 120 to 85 and the company aims to cut absenteeism from 5% to 3%.
