Land Rover sales in its home UK market were down 10.8% to 29,185 units for 2009, despite a healthy gain in December – 2,053 (1.36% market share) versus 1,292 (1.19%).

But full year market share dipped to 1.46% from 1.53% in 2008.


The manufacturer says it enjoyed a particularly strong second half of the year, boosted by UK sales up 93% in the final quarter alone, with new models Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport improving 115% and 116% respectively.


New products launched in 2009 included updated Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport models.


Land Rover UK managing director, John Edwards, said 2009 “has been a very hard year for the motor industry – particularly in the premium segment.  However, we made some tough decisions and restructured our business model to ensure that we were in a strong position to weather the storm.”


Fellow Tata-owned luxury vehicle brand Jaguar sold 18,234 units last year (0.91% share) versus 20,346 (0.95%) in 2008. Production of the X-type launched in 2001 ended in the final quarter.
