New car registrations were down 6.4% on the same month last year, say UK media reports (7/8/00) citing the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Demand also decreased within the private-buyers sector in July as they awaited the new X-registrations, says the data. According to the SMMT, new car sales were down due to record-high sales in July 1999.

A total of 156,588 new vehicles were registered in July 2000, pushing the total of new car sales this year to 1,373,033 – a 1.1% increase from the first seven months of 1999.

The July month was traditionally a slow month for the car sector as new number-plate changes came into effect in August, said the SMMT. But as new number plates now come out in March and September, sales are running more smoothly throughout the year.

The SMMT is predicting increased growth in the market by 25,000 units, to 2.25 million for 2000.
