“Clearly, the important word is that at the moment, it is under consideration,” a JLR spokeswoman told just-auto. “Obviously when it comes to the sports car, we have made no secret of our desire to produce [one] but we are at an incredibly early stage.

“When it comes to speculation of an estate, we have looked at a number of options to really understand the opportunities for the brand.”

JLR is also ramping up its plans for China where June saw the country become the third largest sales region for both Jaguar and Land Rover.

The automaker has confirmed its intention to manufacture in China and that in the “very near future,” it will operate as a wholly owned national sales company and not as an importer.

Any Chinese production would be “incremental” added JLR although this would equally not happen before another two years.

Discussions are taking place at the moment with local Chinese governments with a view to establishing how the logistics would work.
