The paper noted the ballot of up to 1,500 workers at the plant comes after hundreds of workers marched at the weekend in protest at Ford’s plans to switch production of the XJ sedan and XK sports car to another plant, Castle Bromwich in Birmingham. Many carried banners saying “Don’t let Ford wreck our lives”.
The ballot closes on December 13, the Telegraph said, noting that Ford is stopping production at Browns Lane, which has been making cars since 1951, to save the company from closure. Jaguar is due to lose “hundreds of millions of pounds” this year and will not break even until 2007.
The Daily Telegraph said workers and union leaders fear that the cuts could lead to even more job losses and want to put pressure on the government and Ford to reverse the decision.
