The latest version is restyled with a new 1.1-litre petrol engine and is now sourced from India instead of South Korea, as just-auto reported last December.

On-the-road prices start at £5,995 and the model has a five-year/unlimited distance warranty like all Hyundais sold in the UK.

Although the Amica has remained continuously on sale in Europe, a Hyundai UK spokeswoman told just-auto that the facelifted Indian-made model, introduced in 2002, “didn’t meet UK standards” until now. She added that the company had had numerous requests from previous Amica and Atos customers to bring the model back.

“Some had moved up to the Getz but many though that was too big and liked the size of the Amica,” she added.

“We were constantly getting calls to our customer service centre asking when we were going to bring it back.”

The new UK-specification entry level GSI model has power steering, split-folding rear seat, driver’s airbag, tinted glass, boot light, ABS, front electric windows and a CD player.

The £500-extra CDX adds keyless entry, remote central locking, front fog lamps, alloy wheels, air-conditioning, leather steering wheel and gear knob, body-coloured door mirrors and handles plus a rear spoiler.

Perhaps reflecting the lower Indian production costs, and the fact that the UK distributor is now factory-owned, the on-the-road prices are lower than they were at the time of the original Amica launch in the UK in 2000, despite the introduction of a new and more powerful engine and the improvement in equipment specifications.

The new 1.1 litre four-cylinder 12 valve engine delivers 62 bhp compared to 55 for the previous model.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard and the CDX offers an optional four-speed automatic.
