The new guidance outlines how motor retailers who sell vehicles with no face-to-face contact – such as online, by mail order or on the telephone – need to comply with the Distance Selling Regulations (DSRs). The guidance applies to both used and new car dealers.

The DSRs give consumers who buy goods without face-to-face contact specific rights including a cooling-off period, clear indication of price, information on delivery cost and arrangements, written confirmation and details of complaints and cancellation procedures.

Penny Boys, OFT executive director, said: “A car is an expensive purchase. It is important that people who buy one by distance means get the full benefit of the additional protection of the DSRs. This guidance will help ensure that they do.”
