Citroen’s C5 Airscape ‘concept’, which looks virtually production-ready and is due to make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week, is based on the redesigned, all-new C5, which will debut next year, a source with knowledge of the situation has told just-auto.

“Apparently everything below the waistline is the new C5,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

“Imagine a longer wheelbase, four doors and a hard top roof” to establish what the production car will look like, the source added.

A Citroen UK spokesman confirmed the concept did herald a completely redesigned and genuinely “all-new” C5.

On Monday, Citroen hinted the Airscape, a full-size (in European terms) four-seat convertible, was based on the next production C5, a direct successor to the legendary ‘goddess’ DS sedan that first appeared in the early 1950s.

A convertible of 2008’s redesigned C5 would also be a direct successor to the renowned, and much sought-after, 1960s DS drop-top which was produced only in limited numbers and is now a rare sight.

But the Citroen UK spokesman added that, as far as he was aware, a convertible version was not currently planned.
