Ford Motor Comp. is expected to decide Tuesday (29/8/00) not to reverse its decision on ending car production at its UK Dagenham site, writes the UK’s Financial Times (29/8/00).
According to the newspaper, Chairman of Ford of Europe, Nick Scheele, was due to have a meeting Monday (28/8/00) with union leaders at the group’s Cologne HQ to decide whether other car production could be moved to the east London site, safeguarding the future of Ford`s largest plant in Britain.

Car production at Dagenham, involving the assembly of the Ford Fiesta model, is due to end in the first quarter of 2002, resulting in 3,000 voluntary redundancies. The final figure according to Unions however, could reach 4,700.
The FT says that production of Volvo’s mid-size S40 and V40 cars are set to be transferred from the Nedcar site in the Netherlands, which was a part of the joint agreement with Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors. This venture, says the newspaper, is to be finalised following DaimlerChrysler’s acquisition of a 34 per cent stake in the Japanese car-maker earlier this year.
Although Mr Scheele agreed Monday (28/8/00) that Volvo was seeking a ‘home’ for the cars produced at Nedcar, totalling 140,000 per year, the FT says that he played down prospects of the Dagenham site being considered for any of this work.
