Fischer, 46, started at Southampton two years ago as area manager of trim and final, an area where completed Transits come off the line. More recently the former Ford apprentice became responsible for quality and manufacturing engineering before taking the top job today (1 July).
Born in Ulm, Germany, Fischer joined Ford in 1980 and has held a series of mostly manufacturing posts, including manufacturing engineering manager at the Cologne assembly plant (now a key Fiesta source plant), prior to moving to the UK. His 29 years at Ford have included stints at the company’s Halewood, UK, and Valencia, Spain, plants.
Martin Chapman is now operations manager at Cologne where the European Fusion is built alongside the Fiesta – currently the UK’s best-selling car.
