UK engine production remained steady in July, increasing by a modest 1% to 194,974 units.

Export growth offset a domestic use decline, up 13% to 112,085 in July and 14.5% to 1,030,304 year-to-date. The percentage of engines built for export rose from 56.2% to 61.1%.

Total output for the first seven months of the year was up 5.2% to 1,685,096. Output for domestic use slowed 6.7% to 654,792.

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said: "It's good to see previous significant investment into British engine technology and facilities continue to pay dividends, with strong and growing global demand for our high quality, cutting-edge products."

According to the new 'factory finder' feature in just-auto's QUBE database [subscription required], there are eight engine plants in the UK: Nissan Sunderland with capacity for 250,000; Toyota Deeside (250,000); Volkswagen Group's Bentley in Crewe (3,500); Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover's Wolverhampton (the most recently built facility in the UK) (500,000); BMW Hams Hall (450,000), Ford Bridgend (1,000,000); Honda Swindon (150,000) and Ford Dagenham (1,200,000).
