Employees at the General Motors Vauxhall car plant at Ellesmere Port near Liverpool
saved the company £3,087,269 ($US4.4 million) last year by making suggestions
through the employee recognition scheme.

In 2000, 8,013 ideas were submitted and more than half were implemented. Employees
were rewarded with £713,086 ($US1 million) – a 71 percent boost to
the sum paid out for ideas in 1999.

Cash rewards are likely to increase even further in 2001.

Scheme operator Colin Quick said: “Our target for this year is to receive
three ideas per employee. With a workforce of 4,600, we expect more than 13,000.”
