Motorists gave “Dump the Pump” – the UK campaign to boycott petrol stations until prices are lowered – a mixed reception across the UK, reports local media (2/8/00).

The protest, on the 1st August, accounted for a drop of sales of around 50% in the North East and Yorkshire. Across the rest of the UK however, traders said business went on as usual.

In Scotland, the campaign caused a 10% drop in fuel sales, according to local media citing the Petrol Retailers’ Association.

Environmental pressure groups were critical of the campaign, saying that it was misguided.
