“This figure could be higher, subject to more detailed planning,” Nanjing Automobile’s vice-president Wang Qiu Jing told Sky.

Wang reportedly gave the details during a progress report on plans for Longbridge and the future of Rover and said he believed business planning currently underway would create a viable automotive business both in the UK in Longbridge and in China.

“After successfully completing the purchase of MG Rover’s assets, we have been working with our business partners to develop a viable business plan,” Wang told Sky TV. “This plan is based on our assessment of the market conditions in the UK and Europe, on the efficient use of those assets to be left at Longbridge, and on the formation of a new management team.”

He added that four or five new car models were being planned and that Longbridge production facilities woule be reorganised for capacity of 100,000 cars per year, “probably within five years”.
