Engineers and designers at SAIC owned MG Motor UK’s Longbridge facility near Birmingham had “a major input” into styling, design and engineering development of the new MG3 launched recently at the Guangzhou motor show ahead of first sales in China within months.
The MG3 is the production version of the MG Zero concept – also designed in England and previously displayed at motor shows.

Longbridge, begun early in the 20th century as the giant Austin motor works and the home of MG Rover until that company’s demise in 2005, is now MG Motor UK headquarters and SAIC’s UK technical centre where around 300 engineers and designers are based. The Chinese firm occupies just a small part of what once was a huge multi-factory, multi-site campus – most of the MG Rover-owned facilities have now been demolished and the land redeveloped.
Detailed MG3 specifications won’t be announced until later and MG is yet to confirm where the car will be assembled – its new MG6 is made in China and some will be assembled in Longbridge.
The MG3 was shown in Guangzhou alongside six generations of British compact cars, including an Austin Seven, Morris Minor 1000 and MG 1100.
