UK car production fell for the third successive month in July to 130,274 units. The 7.3% year-on-year drop left year-to-date volumes down 3.5% at 979,067, a fall of 35,090 units.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said the decline was mainly in production for the UK home market, down 10.3% to 271,877 cars so far this year.

Export production fell 6.6% year-on-year in July to 93,881 units, but was off just 0.6% to 707,190 year to date.

“Production in July was dominated by the loss of manufacturing at Longbridge, pitted alongside the start of the annual summer shut-down at UK car makers.

“Exclude MG Rover from the figures and you actually see a year-to-date increase from the other car manufacturers,” said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive.
