Bosch has developed an alternator claimed to be so efficient it can add 5 or 6 mpg to fuel consumption figures and is also five decibels quieter and up to 400cc smaller than conventional models.

Compared to previous versions, the LI-X range of alternators delivers as much as a kilowatt of extra power through a 35% increase in power density to 1.43 watt per cubic centimetre. There is also a rise in maximum operating temperature from 105º C to 120º C and an increase in the maximum degree of efficiency to 76% (VDA average 72%).

The improvements are said to be the result of an innovative new “flat pack” manufacturing technique, which achieves a much higher density of copper wires in the unit’s stator windings.

Bosch will supply the 14V LI-X alternators in three different sizes with outputs ranging from 1.9 to 3.8 kilowatts. The model range is flexible and power outputs can be adjusted for both diesel and petrol engines. The company is also planning a 4 kilowatt, 42 volt version.

The alternator regulator is multifunctional and can be operated through a variety of interfaces, such as BSS, LIN or RVC, in line with the manufacturer’s preference.

The LI-X will first be shown at the Frankfurt motor show in September and production will start at Bosch’s UK plant, near Cardiff, at the beginning of 2004.
