The newspaper said on its website that the recruitment of 300-500 engineers follows the company’s creation last year of 300 new engineering posts, mostly electronic and electronic specialists, last year.

The FT noted that car companies, particularly BMW’s rival Mercedes-Benz, have had problems with reliability in their initial use of advanced electronics in their vehicles.

The newspaper also noted that BMW’s $US68,000-$117,000 7-series model was earlier this month rated by the influential Consumer Reports magazine as the least reliable car after a year on the road in the US.
