The system, which cuts the engine when the car is stopped, and restarts it when the driver takes his foot off the brake, will be supplied by Bosch. It promises fuel savings of around 5%.
Four and six-cylinder engined versions of the 1-series, 3-series and 5-series will be offered with the system.
Autocar notes that this is the first time a stop-start system has been offered by a luxury car manufacturer, and that, although sales of Citroen’s C2 and C3 Stop & Start cars have been slow, such systems are an easy way for vehicle manufacturers to reduce emissions and meet C02 reduction targets.
