BMW will build a new line of I3 petrol engines for the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car at its English engine plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham.
So far shown as a concept, the i8 previews a sports car with plug-in hybrid combining electric drive with a turbocharged engine producing 349hp/300Nm. Claimed acceleration to 100km/h is in under five seconds and the car is said to get 78mpg on the European combined cycle.
