BMW has launched its 2 Series Convertible in the UK car market. The new model directly replaces the 1 Series Convertible and is significantly larger than that car (72mm longer and 22mm wider).
The BMW 2 Series Convertible is the third model in the company’s 2 Series line-up. The 1 Series Convertible sold 130,000 units in its lifetime and BMW is looking for higher sales for the new range. In the UK market, just-auto was told that BMW is targeting 2 Series Convertible lifetime sales in the region of 24,000 units versus 20,000 units achieved for the 1 Series Convertible.

The new car will initially be available with a choice of four engines, including a new 2.0-litre diesel for the 220d and, for the first time in a BMW convertible, an M Performance variant, the M235i. Fuel economy improvements over the previous model average 18%, BMW says. There are also substantial gains to interior space and luggage capacity on the back of the extended body dimensions and wheelbase (30mm longer). Among other improvements, BMW engineers have managed to reduce wind noise – a criticism sometimes made of the previous model. This was achieved with added insulation in the roof fabric and improved aerodynamics (Cd of 0.31).
The electrically operated folding soft top lowers or raises in just 20 seconds (well, maybe a few seconds more according to our highly rigorous testing) at the touch of a button, and can be carried out at speeds of just over 30mph.
Luggage capacity increases by 30 litres to 335 litres and BMW claims that gives it the largest boot in its class.
The BMW 2 Series Convertible is on sale from 28 February, 2015. It will be priced from GBP29,180 OTR for a 220i Sport Convertible.
