BMW’s 1 Series coupé will go on sale on November 24 in Britain as the ‘halo’ model in the line-up and with a GBP700 price premium over the 5-door model, said Carl Sanderson, general manager, product planning at BMW UK.

“To be quite frank it’s really aimed at people who can’t afford a 3 Series coupé,” he said.

He is predicting sales for the coupé to be around 3,500 in the UK in 2008. The five-door will have sales of around 22,000 and the three-door 8,600.

“The coupé is the most sporty and dynamic model in the 1 Series range and we think it will attract younger, modern buyers,” said Sanderson. “I think it is quite good that it will be fairly exclusive, almost rare,” he said.

The final model in the 1 series line-up will be the convertible which will go on sale in early April 2008 – although at the Tokyo motor show BMW unveiled a concept coupé dubbed the Tii.

“This really is just exploring how far we can push the 1 series and at the moment there are no production plans for it,” said Sanderson.

Prices for the 1 Series coupé start at GBP21,585 for the 120dES rising to GBP24,855 for the 123d SE and GBP29,745 for the 135i M Sport.

Meanwhile, BMW is on track for record global sales of 1.4 million cars this year and is now forecasting worldwide sales of 1.8 million by 2012.
