Two of the biggest operators in the UK biodiesel industry have formed a joint venture to increase production of the fuel by over 500%.

Global Commodities (UK) Ltd., the country’s largest manufacturer of biodiesel, and Rix Biodiesel Ltd – one of the largest distributors and retailers – have joined forces to further develop this fast growing market.
Global Commodities will lease an existing vegetable oil processing plant from Rix Biodiesel Ltd in Hull which can easily be adapted to biodiesel production and will eventually be capable of producing more than 120 million litres a year.
Rix had previously acquired the site for development as a biodiesel plant. It was originally a vegetable oil processing facility and can easily be converted to biodiesel manufacturing, with production expected to start before summer. The site is close to the river Hull so raw materials and finished product can be transported by water.
Rix said it had worked hard over the last three years to establish biodiesel in the UK and now operates over 100 forecourts retailing its Bio Blend 5-branded fuel. Some local authorities also buy biodiesel in commercial quantities direct from the firm.
“As the growing awareness of global warming takes effect we expect more local authorities and other organisations to turn to biodiesel as it is the only renewable fuel that is a ‘drop-in’ solution requiring no vehicle modification or capital expenditure,” a statement by the two firms said.
