In 2006, 858 people were killed and 6,622 were seriously injured in crashes involving at-work drivers – 16 deaths and 127 serious injuries every week.

The figures show an increase of 9% in deaths and serious injuries in crashes involving at-work drivers from 2005 (when these statistics were first published), when there were 850 deaths and 6,012 serious injuries.

This rise may be due to improvements in police reporting, but it is thought many at-work road casualties are still not properly categorised by police on crash report forms. Previous research estimated that one in three road deaths involve an at-work driver[3].

Brake, together with FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, urges all companies to ensure they have robust driver education and risk management systems to prevent crashes among employees who drive for work.

Companies can take advantage of free, highly-acclaimed one-day courses by the FedEx & Brake Road Safety Academy. Participants learn to deliver effective awareness-raising presentations to employees on safe driving.  Training takes place around the UK, with attendees receiving a free presentation and DVD.

FedEx UK Managing Director Operations, William Martin, said: “We strongly urge companies to take advantage of this course. It is free and is highly acclaimed. It provides employees with skills training on safe driving and also raises awareness of the numerous hazards on the road.”
