Problems with burning wiring on vehicles previously recalled to have ABS control unit harnesses modified have prompted General Motors’ Vauxhall Motors unit in the UK to recall about 355,000 Corsa C generation three and five-door models built between 2004 and 2006 and Combo van and Tigra models built between 2004 and 2008 to replace the entire ABS brake control unit.

“We’ve had some fires, yes,” GM spokesman Denis Chick told just-auto.com on Wednesday. “The previous recall was to modify the wiring on the ABS control unit. It appears that wasn’t as robust a fix as it could have been on some cars.”

He stressed that the number of cars affected by what a GM press release referred to as a “thermal incident” was “in the hundreds rather than in the thousands”. After further investigation, it had been decided to change the whole ABS control unit and its cover.

The current D generation Corsa models introduced in 2006 are not affected by the recall.

Chick said the recall was largely a UK problem due to the location of the ABS unit on right-hand-drive cars – the original recall was to correct a problem of water leakage into the ABS unit located in the left-hand wheel arch. Opel-brand cars sold in Ireland, also right-hand drive, are also affected, he noted. He was not aware of cars sold in other markets being affected.
