363,687 commercial vehicles were sold in 2003, 12.9% up on 2002, and the best sales in the sector since the late 1980s. 2003’s total was just 2% short of 1989’s record total of 371,104.
Light commercial vehicle sales were 303,755, up 14% on 2002. Truck sales were 55,590, up 7.1%, the RMI said, citing Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders statistics.
RMI franchised dealer director Alan Pulham said: “The continued growth in home deliveries, fuelled by internet and television shopping helped to increase commercial vehicle sales to the best levels seen for almost 15 years.
“Strong commercial vehicle sales are an indicator of a strong economy. These figures bode well for 2004.”
