Toyota GB will recall about 4,200 Turkish-built CH-R crossovers with the 1.2-litre petrol engine to reflash software that controls the electronic park brake. The move is part of a global recall that will also see about 1,400 Prius previous generation plug-in hybrids recalled here in the UK to uprate a fuse.

Vehicles in Europe will also be recalled, a spokesman said.

Earlier, Toyota Australia said it would recall 4,886 C-HR models produced from July 2016 until October 2017. The unaffected hybrid version is not sold there.

"On involved vehicles, there is a possibility that the Skid Control Electronic Control Unit may incorrectly identify a small increase in circuit resistance of the EB motor as an open circuit. Should this occur, warning lights will illuminate and this may result in an inability to release the parking brake. In some cases, it can prevent the parking brake from being applied. This condition typically occurs when the EB has not been operated for a period of time."

Updating the programming would take approximately one hour to complete, the automaker said.

The US recall involves approximately 28,600 2018 C-HRs and 39,900 Model Year 2012 – 2015 Prius Plug-In Hybrids.

The automaker said the hybrid system on the involved PHEVs contains an EV fuse which may malfunction if the vehicle is repeatedly operated in EV mode under high load driving conditions, such as during a long hill climb. If the fuse malfunctions, warning lights and warning messages will illuminate. In some cases, the vehicle can be driven, but with reduced power. In other cases, the hybrid system could shut down, resulting in the loss of motive power. Power steering and braking will not be affected. Loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash.

Toyota dealers will replace the fuse with an improved one at no cost. Recall letters go out in January.
