Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it has signed a new agreement with Sumitomo Metal Mining Company, aimed at stepping up collaboration in the development and mass production of cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for electric vehicles (EVs). Toyota aims to launch a new battery electric vehicle (BEV) model powered by ASSBs in the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
Toyota pointed out that ASSBs, primarily composed of a cathode, an anode, and a solid electrolyte, are next-generation batteries that offer major benefits such as smaller size, higher power output, and longer life compared with current liquid-based batteries that use electrolyte solutions. “When used in BEVs, all-solid-state batteries are expected to deliver enhanced performance, such as longer driving range, shorter charging times, and higher output,” the company added.

Toyota confirmed that the two companies have been conducting joint research on cathode materials for ASSBs since 2021, focusing on key challenges such as cathode material degradation during repeated charging and discharging cycles.
Using Sumitomo’s proprietary powder synthesis technology, the two companies recently developed a “highly durable cathode material” suitable for all-solid-state batteries. Sumitomo is now making preparations to launch mass production of this new cathode material. The two companies will also continue to collaborate in the development of related ASSB cathode material technologies, to further improve performance, quality, and safety, and to reduce mass production costs
Toyota said the aim is “to achieve the world’s first practical use of all-solid-state batteries in BEVs, potentially changing the future of automobiles and helping to realize a carbon-neutral society.”
