Toyota Motor Corporation said it is suspending production at nine group plants in Japan from Wednesday until the end of the week following a powerful earthquake that struck just off the northeast-coast of Honshu island on Saturday.
The world's largest vehicle manufacturer said it was halting operations at 14 production lines within the nine plants nine, which are located in five separate prefectures including Aichi, Iwate and Fukuoka. They produce a broad range of Toyota and Lexus passenger vehicle models for the domestic and export markets.

The company said that while its vehicle assembly plants did not incur any direct damage from the earthquake, a number component plants did, which is causing supply delays. It did not disclose how much of its production will be affected by the stoppages.
Toyota overtook Volkswagen Group to become the world's top-selling automaker in 2020, after its global sales under the Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus and Hino brands fell by 11% to 9.53 million units.
