Toyota began selling its redesigned Alphard and Vellfire petrol and hybrid-electric (HEV) minibuses in Japan this week with plug in hybrid (PHEV) models set to follow in coming months.
Toyota first launched the Alphard in 2002 during a wave of minivan popularity and the fourth generation models on sale this week came after an eight year model cycle. They were designed with a particular focus on passenger comfort under the ‘“’the joy of comfortable mobility’ slogan which was reflected in the new platform design with reduced noise and vibration and improved driving dynamics and fuel economy.
The new range makes a clearer differentiation between the Alphard and Vellfire models with the more upmarket Vellfire given a more aggressive design and unique drivetrain option.
Alphard prices start at JPY5.4m for the 2.5-litre diesel model, rising to JPY8.72m for the Series Parallel Hybrid System version also based on the 2.5-litre diesel.
Vellfire prices start at JPY6.55m for the 2.4-litre petrol turbo model, rising to JPY8.92m for the 4WD Series Parallel Hybrid System.
Toyota is aiming for monthly sales of around 8,500 units of the new model which are produced by its Toyota Auto Body subsidiary in Inabe in Mie Prefecture.
