Toyota’s Australian vehicle import company has been the victim of an attempted cyber attack. Reports in Australia say the cyber attack left employees without access to their e-mail messages for days. Employees were reportedly told to use other forms of communications such as telephone and face-to-face meetings instead.

Concerns will be raised more generally over cyber security if hackers can penetrate the back-end systems of a major car company.

In a statement Toyota Australia said it “can confirm it has been the victim of an attempted cyber attack.”

It also said that it believes no private employee or customer data has been accessed.

The statement added: “The threat is being managed by our IT department who is working closely with international cyber security experts to get systems up and running again.

“At this stage we have no further details about the origin of the attack.
