Toyota chief Akio Toyoda has denied the company is looking to increase production overseas at the expense of its domestic factories as the surging yen makes it more costly to produce vehicles in Japan.

Opel said on Monday afternoon (18 October) that further negotiations over the future of its Antwerp, Belgium, assembly plant had ended and that vehicle assembly would stop at the end of this year.

About 200 General Motors workers and retirees turned up for a weekend demonstration outside the gates of United Auto Workers headquarters.
Saturday’s demonstration was organised by workers from the automaker’s large assembly plant in Orion, Michigan to protest the UAW’s decision, allowing GM to assign workers with seniority of 10 years to a second-wage tier that would require them to take a 50 percent cut in pay.

Fiat Group plans to invest 10bn reais (US$6bn) in Brazil by 2015 in operations that include production of cars, car parts and agricultural machinery.

Around 70% of that total will be invested in cars, with the company expecting to unveil 20 new models or upgraded version of current ones in 2011, executives said, adding that further details of the investment will be announced by the end of the year.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA is to conduct a voluntary safety recall involving around 740,000 vehicles over concerns that a small amount of the brake fluid could slowly leak from the brake master cylinder, resulting in illumination of the brake warning lamp.

The vehicles concerned include the 2005 through 2006 Avalon, 2004 through 2006 Highlander (Non Hybrid) and Lexus RX330, and the 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350.
