Nissan Motor said in Tokyo it had sold over 20,000 Leafs since the electric car went on sale in December 2010.
Of those, 9,000 Leafs were sold in the US and 60% went to California where electric cars are particularly popular.
Nissan expects to have sold over 10,000 in the US by the end of 2011.
