Toyota models rank highest in four of five vehicle segments for initial quality in Thailand, according to JD Power.

The sixth annual study said overall initial quality of new vehicles in Thailand continued to improve as new vehicle owners reported an average of 232 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100)—down from 239 PP100 in 2004 and 250 PP100 in 2003.

For the third consecutive year, the study found pickup truck owners reported their new vehicles to be less problem-prone (229 PP100) when compared to passenger cars (236 PP100) and utility vehicles (271 PP100).

The Honda City (262 PP100) led the entry midsize car segment, followed by Toyota Vios (263 PP100) and Honda Jazz (271 PP100).

For a second consecutive year, the Toyota Corolla Altis (186 PP100) and Nissan Sunny Neo (202 PP100) were ranked first and second in the midsize car segment, respectively. The Mitsubishi Lancer (217 PP100) rounded out the top three in the segment.

In the extended cab pickup segment, the largest pickup segment in terms of number of models and sales volume, the Hilux Vigo (210 PP100) was followed by the Mazda Fighter and Mitsubishi Strada in a tie at 224 PP100.

In the double cab pickup segment, the Hilux Vigo (224 PP100) was followed by the Chevrolet Colorado (231

“Almost 50% who experience no problem with their vehicle’s quality would definitely repurchase the make. This dropped to 30% among customers who experienced three or more problems with their vehicle, underscoring the importance of product quality,” JD Power said.

The study was based on surveys of 3,233 new vehicle owners who purchased their vehicles between January and August 2005. The study includes 41 different vehicle models from 10 brands.
