Manufacturers exhibiting at the two-week Thailand Motor Expo 2009, which closed in early December, reported rising consumer confidence after four years of declining sales.
Market leader Toyota reported a 24.4% increase in sales to 24,562 units for the month; followed by Isuzu with 11,084 units (+8.6%); Honda with 9,550 units (+21.6%); Nissan 3,108 units (+56.15); and Mitsubishi (+45.2%).
Sales of passenger cars rose by 32.3% to 24,054 units during the month, compared with 18,176 units a year earlier; while sales of commercial vehicles rose by 18.2%, from 27,892 to 32,977 units.
Cumulatively, vehicle sales in the first eleven months of 2009 declined by 14.3% to 476,786 units, compared with 556,268 units in the same period of 2008, reflecting a very weak first half. December sales are expected also to be strong following a strong order intake at the motor show. Full-year sales are forecast to come in at around 530,000 units, compared with 615,000 units in 2008.
